Mazda to Make Brake Override System Standard

AutoBeat Daily

Mazda Motor Corp. will install brake override systems in its vehicles worldwide as models are revamped, the company tells several news organizations.

Brake override systems return the engine to idle when the driver steps on the brake and accelerator pedals simultaneously—or if the driver depresses the brake to counteract unintended acceleration. Mazda says it has not received complaints about unintended acceleration but decided to adopt the system in response to heightened consumer concern about vehicle safety.

Brake override technology has gotten attention since Toyota Motor Corp. began installing it on some vehicles recalled because of acceleration problems the company links to loose floor mats. The company has promised to install the system on all 2011 models.

Ford Motor Co. also says it will add the system, starting in the 2011 model year. The system is already available from most luxury brands and vehicles from Chrysler, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan and Volkswagen, according to online data provider Edmunds.com.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said last week it might recommend that automakers equip all new vehicles with the system. U.S. lawmakers say they might enact legislation to make brake override systems mandatory on new vehicles.
