U.S., South Korean Free-Trade Deal Goes into Effect March 15

In less than a month, the United States will implement the first of three free-trade agreements passed by Congress last fall.

The trade accord with South Korea will go into effect March 15, following the completion over the Presidents Day weekend of the final remaining legal issues, trade officials said Feb. 21.

2011 New Truck Registrations Up 23% from 2010

New commercial vehicle registrations for Class 3-8 vehicles for 2011 numbered 460,948 units, an 23.3 percent increase 373,975 units in 2010, according to Polk's Quarterly Commercial Vehicle Report.

Compared to 2009, registrations are up 39.9 percent. However, compared to the high point achieved in 2006, new registrations of commercial vehicles are still down 345,000 units.

Visteon Names Robert Krakowiak Vice President and Treasurer

VAN BUREN TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- Visteon Corp. announced the appointment of Robert R. Krakowiak as vice president and treasurer, effective immediately. Krakowiak will be responsible for all activities related to corporate treasury at Visteon, a global automotive supplier based in Van Buren Township, Mich. He replaces Michael Lewis, who left the company to pursue other opportunities.

Krakowiak has 20 years of senior financial, operating and engineering leadership experience at global companies in automotive and other industries. He joins Visteon after approximately seven years at Owens Corning, where most recently he was vice president of finance for the composite solutions business. His previous roles at Owens Corning included vice president, corporate financial planning and analysis; divisional vice president and controller; and assistant treasurer.

3M, Chesapeake Energy Partner to Create CNG Tank Technology

3M and Chesapeake Energy Corp. will collaborate in designing, manufacturing and marketing a broad portfolio of compressed natural gas tanks for use in all sectors of the U.S. transportation market, starting with commercial vehicles.

3M's CNG tank solution combines the company's proprietary liner advancements, thermoplastic materials, barrier films and coatings, and damage-resistant films to transform the pressure vessel industry. Using nanoparticle-enhanced resin technology, 3M Matrix Resin for Pressure Vessels, 3M will create CNG tanks that are 10 percent to 20 percent lighter with 10 percent to 20 percent greater capacity, all at a lower cost than standard vessels.

Dorman Products Inc. Reports Record Sales and Earnings for the Fourth Quarter and 2011

COLMAR, Pa. – Dorman Products Inc. announced financial results for the fourth quarter ended December 31, 2011.

Revenues for the fourth quarter ended December 31, 2011 increased 14 percent over the prior year to $139.1 million from $122.5 million. The fourth quarter 2011 results include 14 weeks while prior year results include only 13 weeks. Revenue growth before the impact of the additional week’s sales in 2011 was 9 percent.

U.S. Motorists Drive Fewer Miles in 2011

WASHINGTON -- Americans hit the brakes on travel in 2011, as travel on U.S. roads fell to its lowest level since 2003, government data shows.

Last year, U.S. drivers logged 35.7 billion fewer miles over 2010 -- down 1.2 percent -- to 2.963 trillion miles, the Federal Highway Administration reported.

Peugeot in Talks with GM on Possible Alliance

PARIS -- Shares in French car maker PSA Peugeot Citroën soared Wednesday after it emerged the company is in talks with U.S. auto giant General Motors Co. about a possible alliance, as it grapples with weak sales and a raging price war in Europe in the small-vehicles segment, on which it relies for most of its business.

French labor minister Xavier Bertrand confirmed the talks on French radio. "The chairman of the group (Peugeot Citroën) informed me last night of these discussions over a strategic partnership," he said.

Gentex Promotes Bruce Los to Senior Vice President

ZEELAND, Mich. -- Gentex Corp., the Zeeland, Mich. -based manufacturer of automatic-dimming rearview mirrors and camera-based lighting-assist and driver-assist systems for the automotive industry, commercial fire protection products and dimmable aircraft windows, today announced that Human Resources Vice President Bruce Los has been promoted to senior vice president.

Los has been with Gentex since 2004, leading the company's human resources group. In his new role, he has responsibility for facilities, the travel/flight department, and human resources -- groups that provide global infrastructure support for the company's employees.

Autoliv Raises Dividend to a Record Level

STOCKHOLM -- The Board of Directors of Autoliv Inc. – the worldwide leader in automotive safety systems – raised the company’s quarterly dividend to stockholders by two cents to 47 cents per share for the second quarter 2012, an increase of 4.4 percent from the previous quarter.

The dividend declared today will be payable on Thursday, June 7, to Autoliv stockholders of record on the close of business on May 23. The ex-date, when the shares will trade without the right to the dividend, will be Monday, May 21.

OBITUARY: Frank Norfleet, Early Founder of Association of Automotive Aftermarket Distributors

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Frank M. Norfleet, a true icon of the automotive aftermarket industry, passed away peacefully on Friday, Feb. 17 at the age of 93.

A lifelong Memphian, he was born on Nov. 27, 1918. He leaves his wife of 69 years, Jean Norfleet; three daughters and sons-in-law, Janet and Mike Sheahan, Jean and John Laughlin and Frances and Alex Thompson; seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. His half-brother, Dunbar Abston, Jr. (and Connie) also survive him. His father, Cecil Norfleet; his mother, Esther Cook Norfleet Abston; his stepfather Dunbar Abston, Sr.; and a brother, Everett Norfleet, predeceased him.
