Wabash Reports Dip in 1Q Trailer Production

Transport Topics

Trailer maker Wabash National Corp. said Friday its first-quarter sales will drop by about 1,000 units from the previous first quarter to about 10,800 trailers.

The decrease reflects shipping delays related to bad Midwest weather in February and an increase in the number of units awaiting customer pickup, “which we believe are a result of softness in the transportation sector,” Wabash said in a statement.

First-quarter sales include about 1,200 platform trailer units sold by Transcraft, which was acquired on March 3, 2006. Wabash is based in Lafayette, Ind.

“We are generally pleased with the progress being made on attaining our goals for 2007,” said Dick Giromini, Wabash’s chief executive officer.

“Quote and order activity remains in line with expectations and we remain confident in our ability to maintain price increases and deliver 52,000 units this year,” he said in a statement, adding that the company is on track to produce 11,000 units in the first quarter.
